Artificial Insemination

A.I. is available and has proved extremely successful for us. It has allowed access to a stallion that mare owners would not normally be able to use due to distance and health constraints of their mare. Further advantages include that the mare is kept at home with none of the stress, either for her or her owner, which is usually associated with transportation, strange surroundings and unfamiliar people. As well as this the use of A.I. can prevent the transmission of infection and lessen the risk of injury to both the stallion and mare.

Veterinary costs for the semen chilling and handling costs are payable by the mare owner to the studs vet's direct. The approximate cost of this is normally £6.00 (plus VAT).

The cost of transporting semen (normally overnight) is payable by the mare owner to the studs vet's. The approximate cost of an overnight postage is normally between £15.00 and £20.00.

After the nomination form is completed, we shall contact you with the details of our vets. The stud's vets must then be contacted by the mare owners vet to co-ordinate the procedures.

The stud's vets require a minimum of 24 hours notice of when the semen is required.

Transport is not available over bank holidays. Semen collected on Friday a.m. can be delivered on Saturday morning. After that, collection on Monday can be delivered on Tuesday. There is no collection on Saturdays or Sundays.

Please see Highland Pony Society website for details for registration for Artificial Insemination.

Non-Highland mares also taken.
Mares kept at grass or other by arrangement.
All mares must be swabbed.
